Bereshit: The Creation of Truth

This week we begin again the annual Torah reading cycle with Parshat Beresheet (Genesis/Beresheet 1:1-). In the parashah we read the creation story, within which God says “Let us make adam/human in our image…” For centuries the plural nature of this verse has been explored. In a midrash/rabbinic legend, the rabbis imagined a conversation between God and the angels. The angels of love, truth, justice and peace argue about whether or not the human should be created. Truth claims that the human should not be created because he will lie. Peace proclaims the human should not be created because she will make war. How does God react? God throws the angel of Truth to the ground and in that moment when the angels are caught unawares God created the human.

Rabbi Levi Yitzhak of Berditchev questioned why God left Peace alone, since the angel had also argued against human’s creation. His answer is that it is each human being’s search for and r of his/her individual truth as THE Truth that brings about war and strife. Only with Truth cast to the ground can peace be allowed to flourish and grow.

Given the current state of our world, where so many claime that their truth is THE truth, thereby bringing about strife, war and bloodshed, I find this teaching to be quite poignant. I would like to share at this time my own thoughts on this, in poetic form.

This week’s parashah is Shemot (Shemot/Exodus 1:1 - 6:1). Shemot means names and it begins with a list of the names of the Israelites who came to Egypt with Jacob after reuniting with his beloved son Joseph. The Israelites then multiply greatly in numbers until we are told that a new king/Pharaoh arose who did not know Joseph. White Privilege, Charlottesville and Our Responsibility

Author's note: Usually my posts deal with the Torah portion or "spiritual matters."  Today I am writing my own thoughts in the aftermath of this weekend's tragedy in Charlottesville.   To me, these matters are indeed spiritual, because they deal with the human spirit and what God desires of us all, as created in the Divine image. Though written from my perspective as a rabbi with a Jewish audience in mind, I know that not all those who will read this are indeed Jewish.  However, much of what I wrote applies to white people, and Americans, in general. I believe the issues I raise are essential if we are going to make any progress in the fight against racism and hatred. Psalm for Friday: Psalm 93, Verse 5

Your witnessing is truly affirmed; holiness befits your house, God, for all times. The conclusion of this brief, but joyous, psalm reminds us of the nature of holiness and godliness in our world. It is God that witnesses the beauty, glory and complexity of existence.  We can affirm this completely because it is through us that God witnesses the nature of existence.  We are the eyes of God.  We, One with the Divine, have the eyes to see the world in all its splendor because we are living and acting in eat day after day. If we pay attention, we can  see the splendor around us, even beneath the mire that sometimes appears to be the reality. What we witness when we look at the world with our souls, the godliness within us, is the holiness that exists within everything.  This holiness fills the world, which is God's house. Commentary on Parshat Tzav

This week's torah portion is Tzav ( Vayikra /Leviticus 6:1 - 8:36). In it the detailed descriptions of the various sacrifices to be offered continues. I would like to focus on one particular sacrifice and what we might learn from it today. The final sacrifice mentioned in the parashah is the zevakh shelamim . This is usually translated as the "peace offering" or "good-will offering.” The word shelamim comes from the same root as shalom /peace and shalem /whole. One contemporary understanding of this sacrifice is as an offering of greeting. According to Baruch Levine and other scholars, it was a meal shared between the priests, the people who brought the offering and God. In other words, through sharing a sacred meal there was a connection being made between the people, the priests and the Divine. Not only was this a meal of greeting, but the sharing of the sacrificial animal could also bring a sense of peace and wholeness that was a direct result
