sorry for the hiatus

Dear online kehillah (community),

I have not been sending out my psalm commentaries this week at first because of time issues and then computer issues. I will try to send at least one out this week in addition to my Torah commentary. The truth is that much of June and July are going to be quite hectic. I will do my best to keep up with the weekly parashah (Torah portion) and eventually finish up the daily psalm commentaries, but not on as regular basis as usual.

On another note, I am scheduling Shabbat and weekend teaching opportunities for 5771 (aka 2010-2011).   If you would like to bring me to your community as a scholar in-residence please be in touch - or pass along my information to the people who make those decisions in your community.

I hope you are all enjoying your summer so far.

This week’s parashah is Shemot (Shemot/Exodus 1:1 - 6:1). Shemot means names and it begins with a list of the names of the Israelites who came to Egypt with Jacob after reuniting with his beloved son Joseph. White Privilege, Charlottesville and Our Responsibility

Author's note: Usually my posts deal with the Torah portion or "spiritual matters."  Today I am writing my own thoughts in the aftermath of this weekend's tragedy in Charlottesville.   To me, these matters are indeed spiritual, because they deal with the human spirit and what God desires of us all, as created in the Divine image. Though written from my perspective as a rabbi with a Jewish audience in mind, I know that not all those who will read this are indeed Jewish.  However, much of what I wrote applies to white people, and Americans, in general. I believe the issues I raise are essential if we are going to make any progress in the fight against racism and hatred. Psalm for Friday: Psalm 93, Verse 5

Your witnessing is truly affirmed; holiness befits your house, God, for all times. The conclusion of this brief, but joyous, psalm reminds us of the nature of holiness and godliness in our world. It is God that witnesses the beauty, glory and complexity of existence.  We can affirm this completely because it is through us that God witnesses the nature of existence.  We are the eyes of God.  We, One with the Divine, have the eyes to see the world in all its splendor because we are living and acting in eat day after day. If we pay attention, we can  see the splendor around us, even beneath the mire that sometimes appears to be the reality. Parshat Naso - Beyond the Bitter Waters

The parashah /portion this Shabbat is Naso ( Be'midbar / Numbers 4:21 - 7:89 ). The parashah includes one of the most difficult and painful passages in the Torah, the ordeal of the Sotah , or suspected adulteress. According to the Torah if a man suspects his wife of adultery (not the other way around, since man could have many wives and have sexual relations with other women as long as they weren't betrothed or married to another man) he would bring her before the priest and there would be a ritual in which she would be made to drink the "bitter waters". This was a concoction consisting of water, dirt from the sanctuary floor and ink from a piece of parchment on which had been written the words of the curses that would befall the woman were she to be found guilty and which had just been read aloud to the woman and all those present.
