Mistakes do happen. I accidentally posted a commentary for last week's Torah portion earlier today instead of this week's. please accept my apologies . I hope you will find this one enlightening anyway. Pun intended :-)

Torah Commentary for Ha'azinu and Shabbat Shuva

It seems that every year Ha'azinu ( Devarim /Deuteronomy 32:1-52)is a parashah that I have skipped over in my Torah commentaries. I find this fascinating, as it is such a rich portion. However, this year, as with most years, it falls on Shabbat Shuvah (the Sabbath of Return), which falls between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. So here I sit, in the midst of  teshuvah /repentance, as well as leading a number of services,  trying to think about what this parashah means. I am trying my best to be mindful and in the moment, yet I find myself drawn into the future ...a week from now ... when Yom Kippur begins.  Such is life in this moment. So I will make a brief commentary, which actually makes for a nice change of pace! The parashah consists of Moses's final speech to the people before he is to die. Beyond Good and Evil: Destroying the Binaries, Banishing Shame and Recreating Our World [aka: a lengthy commentary in honor of my 50th birthday]

In the Merriam-Webster online dictionary, one definition of dichotomy is “ a division into two especially mutually exclusive or contradictory groups or entities.”   The term often gets used interchangeable with “binaries” or “binary opposition.” Though there are differences, I will be using the terms somewhat interchangeably (my apologies to queer theorists, anthropologist, philosophers and many friend).   I especially want to focus on the concept of   “binary oppositions,” where the guiding the assumption is that there exists a pair of terms that are seen as opposites and that there is a clear distinction between the two.   Not only that, but that societal “norms” (especially race, gender, sexuality, etc.) tend to determine which one of the two opposites is viewed as the dominant (or preferable, in my opinion) pole. Commentary on Parshat Bo: Letting Go of It All

This week’s parashah , Bo (Shemot/Exodus 10:1-13:16), begins “Then God said to Moses, ‘Go to Pharaoh. For I have hardened his heart and the hearts of his courtiers, in order that I may display these My signs among them, and that you may recount in the hearing of your children and your children’s children how I made a mockery of the Egyptians and how I displayed My signs among them – in order that you may know that I am God.’” (10:1-2). This is then followed by the onset of the eighth plague of locusts. The parashah continues with the continued hardening of Pharaoh’s heart after the eighth and ninth plagues and then the last plague, the death of the firstborn. The parashah concludes with the commandments to dedicate the first-born of the Israelites to God and to observe Pesakh/Passover. Parshat Balak - between two suns

This week's parashah /portion Balak can be found in the book of Bamidbar /Number 22:2-25:9. We read in the fifth chapter of Pirkei Avot  (the Ethics of the Fathers) that there were ten things which God created bein hashmashot - at twilight (literally, between the two suns). Though it does not specify which twilight, the Babylonian Talmud assumes that it is the twilight before the first Shabbat. In other words, these were the last things which God created prior to resting on the first Shabbat.  Each of the things created could be viewed as miracles which superseded the laws of nature in some way. Maimonides stated the reason for this text is to teach us that they were actually not defying the laws of nature. Rather, they were actually part of creation, created by God at that last mystical moment and then pre-programmed to occur or be used at a specific time.
